Your resume mistakes are a problem when they become the types of errors that HR managers see often. These errors make it difficult for hiring managers and recruiters to get past a candidate who did not take the time to polish the resume to perfection. When HR finds someone with a mistake-free resume, that person may move ahead of you for the job if all other considerations are equal.

A resume also serves as your first impression with an employer. Therefore, it becomes important to make the best first impression possible. Your skills, qualifications and work history may look great on paper, but an HR manager may not spend time digging into your sparkling background if your resume has glaring errors.

Common mistakes to avoid include grammatical errors, typos, poor formatting, a lack of focus and length. Other errors that may doom your application range from lies and inaccuracies to the wrong contact information and a generic resume not tailored to the employer.

Make sure everything you put into the resume shows your actual work history, experience and qualifications. Then you need to get the format to fit onto one page, create bullet points, use active verbs and proofread the document. Find great examples of a resume and try to mimic that type of style.

Have a friend or trusted colleague look over your resume to see what you can improve. You can always run the document by a resume expert to see what advice a professional can give you. Do not skimp on your resume because it is the first thing a recruiter sees during the job search process.
